Most women have an ultrasound, usually in the 18 th week of pregnancy. Ultrasound involves the use of a hand scanner which is passed over your abdomen, emitting sound waves which produce a picture of your baby on a video screen. Ultrasound reveals the structural and anatomical health of your baby. It will reveal conditions like spina bifida, cleft palate, problems with the brain, heart and kidneys and limb development abnormalities. Ultrasound is safe for both mother and baby and results are seen immediately on the video screen. Video tapes can be made of the Ultrasound session which you can replay at take home for friends and family.
